How To Stop Overthinking

Hello everyone. Welcome to

Are you also trying to pause that constant chatter of your mind? Do you also want to eliminate all the unnecessary negative extreme thoughts going inside your head? If yes, then you are at right place.

In this post, I am going to talk about overthinking. YES, overthinking is the problem which is faced by most of the people nowadays.

People are very eager to know how to stop overthinking.

Before knowing that, we have to understand what overthinking is, what are the causes of overthinking, what Are effects of it and how can you stop overthinking?

What is Overthinking?

Cambridge Dictionary defines overthinking as ‘the action of thinking about something too much, in a way that is not useful‘ but it is not the exact definition of overthinking. Let me explain how.

Overthinking is also called GAD( Generalized Anxiety Disorder) as overthinking person experiences a load amount of stress and anxiety.

Whenever someone says that he is suffering from overthinking, he is often referring to negative thoughts. Positive overthinking is actually good for you as you can find solutions to your problem through it. So, overthinking is not a bad thing but negative thinking surely is.

Hence, when we say that we should stop overthinking, we are actually talking about negative thinking here.

Reasons or Causes of Overthinking:

There is no one particular reason or cause of overthinking. It can be caused by many reasons. Some of the main reasons are as follows:

Lack of neurotransmitters like serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter which helps to keep mind calm. Deficiency of serotonin causes overthinking and anxiety. Norepinephrine is another example of neurotransmitter which is also known as the stress hormone.

Overprotective Upbringing is said to be another reason for overthinking. Due to this protective environment, one thinks that everything outside of his zone is dangerous and he hesitates to explore these things.

Cognitive Theory: This theory states that in GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder), people overestimate every outside situation and its intensity.

For example, suppose there is a girl willing to ask her boss for a few days leave. If she had GAD, She will start overestimating this situation. She will think that boss won’t give her leaves or she will get scolded by her boss OR at the extreme end, Boss will fire her.

As you can see here, possibilities of these extreme things to happen are very less (almost negligible) But GAD mind will think worst is most likely to happen. Due to this anxiety, she will avoid interaction with her boss. This fear of extreme consequences will make it’s home in her mind and she will think the same next time

Maybe if she just simply had asked her boss, he might have let her go.

As u can see in above, the cognitive theory says that in GAD, people overestimate the situation and it,s consequences.

Effects of Overthinking:

Overthinking deals a great physical as well as mental harm to the person.

• If we ask the people with AOD, most of them say that they can never be relaxed. their mind is always in the restless state with constant chattering voice.

• They lack concentration. They got distracted by the negative thoughts.

Muscle tension is often observed in overthinking people. which then leads to episodes of back pain.

Headache and pain in the neck.

Insomnia: People can’t sleep properly even when they lie on the bed. Their mind keeps chattering causing anxiety and making it difficult to sleep for them.

There are two types of mentalities- 1) Problem-Centric Mentality  2)Solution-Centric Mentality.

It is often observed that overthinking people are actually the people with Problem centric mentality. For example, there is a person having some financial trouble. If he is problem-centric, he will think about the things like what will happen now, how will I arrange money, how will I feed my family and so on.

Now, the problem will problem-centric thinking is that it keeps growing and worsening. It will waste time as well as disturb his mental health.
